MEET MEL DENNIS
For as long as I can remember, I've been captivated by beautiful interiors, fashion, architecture, and the details that make a space feel extraordinary.
Some of my earliest memories of design began alongside my dad, a civil engineer, visiting the neighborhoods and projects he was working on. While he focused on the engineering, my attention was always drawn to the homes themselves, walking through spaces, studying the details and dreaming about what they could become. I'd carry that inspiration home, drawing floor plans and elevations, designing custom furniture and creating rooms from my imagination. Home-A-Rama and Parade of Homes were practically holidays in my world.
That curiosity led me to study Interior Design & Fashion Merchandising at Philadelphia University, bringing together two things I had always instinctively loved.
FROM DREAMING TO DESIGNING
One of the most meaningful projects of my career has been The Willows at Ashcombe Mansion, a place that held a special place in my heart long before I ever had the opportunity to design within its walls. Since childhood, it was a property my family and I would admire often and talk about whenever we passed by, and one that captured my imagination in countless ways. I dreamed about what might exist beyond its doors, what it would be like to wander through its rooms, how I might decorate them, and even imagined getting married there someday. Years later, I found myself immersed in the transformation of this extraordinary historic property, curating custom furnishings, draperies & pillows, bespoke rugs, wallcoverings, art, and lighting while helping shape the overall interior design direction of its spaces. To have a hand in creating a place that had lived in my imagination for so many years made the experience an especially meaningful, full-circle chapter in my own design story.
YOUR STORY, DESIGNED
Great design begins with listening. I want to understand how you live, what you love, what you're naturally drawn to, and what you may not quite know how to articulate yet. I pay attention to the little things, read between the lines and translate it all into a clear design vision that feels distinctly yours, yet perhaps beyond what you imagined.
Collaboration looks a little different for everyone. Some clients love being part of every detail and decisions, others prefer to hand over the reins and watch it all come together. However you prefer to be involved, I guide the process with a clear vision, making sure you feel heard, confident and excited about where we're headed.
THE HOUSE OF GILD SIGNATURE
While every project is distinctly its own, there's a sensibility I bring to each one. Expect interiors that feel layered and considered, with thoughtful contrast, rich materials, beautiful textures and unexpected details that give a space its character. I'm drawn to the balance of old and new, refined and unexpected, elegance with just the right amount of edge, whether expressed through deep, enveloping color or creamy, light-filled spaces.
More than any particular look, I want a space to have presence. Rooms should flow naturally from one to the next while still holding their own character, with moments of intrigue and a touch of drama where it belongs. It's the layering of beauty, character, and the unexpected that gives a space its soul, and makes it one you remember.
Outside of design, my favorite moments are the ones spent with my husband, our daughter, and our rescue pup, Lola. I love trying new restaurants, traveling together, or escaping to Cape May, our happy place and favorite place to slow down and simply enjoy being together. Of course, design is never too far from my mind. I'm still the one noticing the beautiful house along the way, admiring the details of a restaurant before I've even looked at the menu, or falling down a rabbit hole over a spectacular piece of lighting.
Design has always found its way into my life, and I feel incredibly lucky to share that love with the people who invite me into their homes, businesses and stories.
